MOUNT KENYA

2 Days MOUNTAIN MARATHON via Sirimon Route
"The Harriers Choice"
(This Itinerary is adjustable to 3 or 4 days)

An extremely challenging mountain hike. It must commence very early on the first day in order to accomplish the very strenuous hike from the roadhead 3000m directly to over 4000m. Hence the hiker must spend the night preceding the mountain trek at close proximity to the mountain. It involves a rapid gain in altitude with little or no time to acclimatize making it a daring hike to attempt especially if you are not a seasoned high altitude hiker. The summit attempt and descend back to the roadhead in a day is also as challenging but a bit more practical. Camping is not necessary on this itinerary.

Detailed Day by Day itinerary

Day 0: Optional day (included on our All inclusive - fullboard trip option) recommended for trekkers wishing to travel early to the Mountain Rock lodge (base lodge) to make advance preparations for the trip and participate in a fitness nature hike. After lunch, clients begin an escorted 3-4 hours forest nature walk up to the MauMau cave (2050m), which helps with acclimatization. Alternatively you can visit the nearby local community farms and help promote the local community‚s initiative in ecotourism. Such a visit provide economic justification to the local communities and helps boosts their moral towards the continued Conservation of the natural beauty of the mount kenya forest neighboring their land. (A second day can be spent at the lodge if you wish to participate in both of these pre-hike activities).

Mountain Flowers - Lobelia

Day 1: A very long and tiring day. Departure to the mountain should be as early as 0600hrs (If intending to travel from Nairobi then you must leave at 0300hrs). From Sirimon Park gate you begin your long trek through montane forest, bamboo and rosewood, bypassing the OldMoses camp and onwards through the moorlands up to Shipton‚s Hut, gaining 1600m in altitude in about 10 hours.

Dinner and Overnight-------------------------------------------------------Shiptons Hut (4200m)

Day 2: Pre-dawn attempt of the summit starts at 0300hrs, taking 3-4 hours to reach Pt. Lenana 4985m (the hikers summit) in time to watch the sunrise. On a clear day you can see the snow capped summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro over 350 kms. to the south. Descend back to Shipton‚s camp for breakfast then walk further down to the Sirimon roadhead (3000m) to catch our vehicle for transfer back to the base lodge for a hot shower and lunch. Those traveling back to Nairobi today leave after lunch, arriving there by 1700 hrs. (It is advisable to spend an extra night at the lodge after the hike to recuperate and avoid the night travel back to Nairobi).

Dinner and Overnight------------------------------------------Mountain Rock Lodge (optional)

Beware! This trek is strenuous and there are greater chances of altitude related problems. It is only recommended for career hikers or those who have just hiked on other high altitude areas and have adequately acclimatized, and should abandon the trek if you experience a bout of altitude related complication and descend as fast as possible.
