MOUNT KENYA

8 Days Hike and Technical Climb via Sirimon and Naromoru Trails

Day 1: Transfer from Nairobi to Mountain Rock Lodge (1950m) for lunch. Afternoon nature walk (3-4 hours) through the forest to the MauMau caves, the former hideouts for Kenya's pre-independence guerrilla fighters who resisted British colonial rule in the 1950s. Our resident naturalist tells us about their history and survival techniques but also we learn about the flora and fauna of the area and its ecology. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2: Leave the lodge at 1000hrs together with our guide and porters and drive for two hours to Sirimon Park gate (2600m). On completion of park entry formalities, we have our picnic lunch before we start a 3-4 hour hike through forest, bamboo, rosewood and heather to Old Moses camp (3300m) for dinner and overnight. The forest and bamboo are home to hundreds of buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks and a plethora of bird species. Day 3: Have early breakfast and begin a 6-7 hour trek through the moorlands to Shiptons camp (4200m). Day 4 Depart at 0800hrs and ascend up to the Hausberg col (4700m) on the Summit Circuit Path then descend steeply to Hausberg valley and Oblong tarns before making a further steep ascent, crossing huge boulders on the way to Mackinders camp (4,300m) which is located on the Naromoru route within Teleki Valley. Days 5: Hike for two hours to Austrian Hut (4790m) where we spend the rest of the day preparing for technical climb of Nelion and Batian peaks. Days 6 & 7: Technical climbing; - Batian and Nelion. Guide/porters take care of left luggage at Austrian hut. Day 8: Descend to Met Station to connect with our transfer vehicle to Nairobi.
