MOUNT KENYA

MTK 7: 8 Days TIMAU and CHOGORIA TRAVERSE

 The Land of Contrasts

  Combination of nature and scenery. Timau is less popular but more natural, its lower reaches supporting savannah type of vegetation which abounds in plains game. It's much more convenient for those wishing to tackle Sendeyo and Terere peaks as the route meanders in between the two peaks. Chogoria route has awesome scenery which includes the Temple, Gorges Valley, Mushroom rocks, Billiards Table, Mugi hill etc.

Day 0: NAIROBI-MOUNTAIN ROCK LODGE (MOUNT KENYA)

Transfer from Nairobi to the slopes of Mount Kenya for lunch. In the afternoon is a 3-4 hours nature walk through the forest reserve to Mau Mau caves, the former base for Kenya's freedom fighters. As you hike you learn about plants, birds and animals found in the forest from the escort naturalist guide. A traditional dance performance can also be arranged at the lodge after dinner to liven up the evening. (optionally)

Day 1: NAIROBI-CHOGORIA PARK GATE/MERU MOUNT KENYA LODGE (3000M)

Depart by 0800hrs for a drive to Chogoria. Pass through the central agricultural country to arrive at the Chogoria Village. Lunch on arrival. The vehicle will drop you within the Chogoria forest (2600m) to offer you the chance to hike the remaining distance to the Park gate (3000m). The montane forest is lush and green with several plant species such as Podo and cedar while the Bamboo belt is dense and luxuriant. Both zones are home to hundreds of wildlife species.

Day 2: MOUNTAIN ROCK LODGE-TIMAU ROADHEAD CAMP (3700M)

You are transferred from the base lodge after breakfast to the end of the forest line (3000m) for an easy 2-3 hours walk to Timau Road head camp (3700m). Overnight in tents. En route you could stopover at the equator for a photo session.

Day 3: TIMAU ROADHEAD CAMP-MAJOR'S CAMP (4000M)

You depart early and ascend 300m in 7 hours across gently rolling topography and moorland to Major's Camp (4000m) for overnight in tents. Picnic lunch en-route.

 Day 4: MAJOR'S CAMP-SHIPTON'S CAMP (4200M)

After breakfast you hike further on to Shiptons camp (4200m) through an elevation of 200m with rich lobelias, giant groundsels and tussock grass in about 5 hours for overnight. Picnic lunch is served en route.

 Day 5: SHIPTON'S CAMP-AMERICAN CAMP (4400M)

Have breakfast and depart at 8.00am for an acclimatisation hike on the peak circuit trails via Hausberg col (4600m), TwoTarn (4500m) and down to American camp (4400m) for overnight. It is a trail that offers maximum view of all the major peaks from all angles.

 Day 6: AMERICAN CAMP-LENANA-MINTOS CAMPSITE (4300M)

You are up by 3:00am to start your trek to Pt. Lenana, the hikers summit, to arrive in time to witness the African dawn from a vantage point of 4985m. This hike is 3-4 hours with an ascend of 785m of gentle scramble. Then descend in 2hrs, depending on the pace of your hike, to Mintos camp (4300m) for breakfast and overnight. You have also a leisure exploration of the Gorges valley.

Day 7: MINTOS CAMPSITE-CHOGORIA GATE/MERU MOUNT KENYA LODGE (3000M)

You start hiking at 7:00 am down to Meru Mt. Kenya Lodge for dinner and overnight. you hike down is gentle descent with fantastic view of the main peaks.

 Day 8: CHOGORIA GATE-NAIROBI

After breakfast you hike down the Chogoria forest to connect with a vehicle for an onward transfer back to Nairobi to arrive in the evening.
