MOUNT KENYA

MTK 3 Mt Kenya

7 days SIRIMON PEAK CIRCUMNAVIGATION .

An itinerary recommended for both experienced and inexperienced high altitude trekkers as it offers maximum chances of acclimatisation, virtually guaranteeing a successful summit conquer. Unless otherwise preferred, camping is not necessary on this trip since accommodation is available at the Mountain Rock Lodge and mountain huts. It includes 2 nights at our base Lodge before and after the hike. Clients with extra time are requested to concider adding on a second day at the lodge ahead of their trip in order to get the rare chance to visit the local communities who neighbour the mountain and whose livelihood directly depends on the mountain.

Picnic lunch break

Day 1: NAIROBI-MOUNTAIN ROCK LODGE (MOUNT KENYA)
You are transfered from Nairobi at 0900hrs to arrive at the lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon is a nature walk (3-4 hours) through the forest to the MauMau caves, the former hideouts for Kenya's pre-independence guerrilla fighters who fought against the British colonial masters. The escort guide for the trek talks about their history and the flora and fauna of the forests are home to hundreds of wildlife species.

Tip:Eco-friendly clients can spend an extra day at the Base Lodge to get a chance to participate in our newly introduced community interaction tour of the local farms. This visit helps provide economic benefit and justification to the local communities that helps boosts their moral towards the continued Conservation of the natural beauty of the mount Kenya forest neighbouring their land.

Day 2: MOUNT AIN ROCK LODGE-OLDMOSES CAMP (3300M)
Leave the lodge by 1000hrs together with your guide and porters and drive for less than two hours to Sirimon Park gate (2600m) with an optional stop at the equator. On completion of park entry formalities, have picnic lunch then begin a 3-4 hour hike through forest. Ascend 700m bypassing the bamboo, rosewood and heatherzones to Old Moses camp. The forest and bamboo are home to hundreds of buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks and a plethora of bird species.

Day 3: OLDMOSES CAMP-SHIPTON'S CAMP (4200M)
After an early breakfast commence a 6-7 hour trek to Shiptons camp. The hike is awesome but a good test on individual endurance on the mountain as you cover a 900m. ascent. The moorland walk takes you across hills and valleys in the sprawling moorlands where you get several unique and interesting plants and animals. These include the Giant groundsels and lobelias and the mountain hyrax. Hikers wishing for an extremely slow paced ascent on the mountain can achieve this by adding an extra day at this stage and camping mid-way before Shiptons Camp at Likii North and hiking for only 4 hours on each of the 2 days.

Day 4: SHIPTON'S CAMP-MACKINDER'S CAMP (4300M)
Departing at 0800hrs ascend up the Mackinder ridge and connect the summit circuit trail at Mintos. Follow the trail in the anti-clockwise directioon over the Hausberg col (4700m) then descend steeply to Hausberg valley and Oblong tarns before making a further steep ascent, crossing huge boulders via Two Tarn on the way to Mackinders camp (4,300m) which is located along the Naromoru route within the Teleki Valley.

Day 5: MACKINDER'S CAMP- SHIPTON'S CAMP (4200M)
Leaving the camp at 0300hrs you hike up the steep scree slopes and across rocks to Point Lenana (4985m), the hikers' summit. It is planned that you arrive in time to witness the African Sunrising over the equator, reflect it's golden glow on the Majestic peaks of Batian and Nelion. Later descend to Shipton's camp (4200m) for breakfast then relax for the rest of the day.

Day 6: SHIPTON'S CAMP-MOUNTAIN ROCK LODGE
