Snow capped Mount Kenya
Mount Kenya - Introduction

Mount Kenya is one of the most scenic volcanic mountains in the world. Its features include steep volcanic cliffs and gorges, tarns, picturesque valleys, outcropped ridges and cols that were formed by the cooling lava and subsequent glacial erosion.

A trek up Mount Kenya is exhilarating but challenging. You may hike in a freezing wilderness and spend the nights in tents and/or huts. Point Lenana (4,985m), the third highest peak, is the trekkers' summit which can be reached by any fit walker. But Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m), the two highest peaks, can only be reached by rock climbing.

A climb to Point Lenana has never been an easy one. A steep pre-dawn ascent to the summit is both difficult and tiring but awe-inspiring. You walk on rugged topography and scree slopes. That is why "its conquest" brings with it a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

The best way to appreciate nature is to experience it. For Mount Kenya, the best way to experience its awesome beauty is to climb it.

Magnificent Sunsets and Sunrises

An extinct volcano which last erupted about 3.5 million years ago, Mount Kenya rises to an altitude of 5,199 (17,058 feet) making it the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa.

Its distinct vegetation zones with unique Giant lobelia and scenecio plants and the picturesque peaks and valleys have made it the darling of many high altitude hikers throughout the world.

Perhaps its uniqueness lies in its very location-it is the only mountain with permanent snowcaps that straddles the equator.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro, formerly Kaiser-Wilhelm-Spitze, is a mountain in north-eastern Tanzania. Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain rise in the world,[1] rising 4600 metres (15,000 ft) from the base, and includes the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 metres (19,340 ft), providing the dramatic view from the surrounding plains. Kilimanjaro is a giant stratovolcano, not currently active, with fumaroles that emit gas in the crater on the main summit of Kibo. Scientists concluded in 2003 that molten magma is just 400 metres below the summit crater. Although new activity is not expected, there are fears the volcano may collapse, causing a major eruption similar to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Several collapses and landslides have occurred on Kibo in the past, one creating the area known as the western breach. Although there is no recorded history of eruptions, local legend speaks of activity around 170 years ago.
